Scotland might be famous for lochs, castles, and whisky, but it also boasts a rich and thrilling motorsport heritage. Scotland’s passion for motorsport runs deep, from Formula One champions to local rally legends and historic racing circuits.

Scottish Legends of the Track

Scotland has produced some of the finest racing talent in the world:

Jim Clark – Two-time Formula One World Champion (1963, 1965), considered one of the most significant drivers.

Jackie Stewart – Three-time Formula One World Champion (1969, 1971, 1973), known as “The Flying Scot” and a pioneer in racing safety.

David Coulthard – 13-time Grand Prix winner and long-time ambassador for the sport.

Allan McNish – Renowned endurance racer and three-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner.

Dario Franchitti – Born in Bathgate, West Lothian – Four-time IndyCar Series champion and triple Indy 500 winner.

Scottish Motorsport Circuits

While Scotland currently doesn’t host a Formula One race, it has several iconic circuits:

Knockhill (Fife) – Perched in the hills above Dunfermline, Knockhill Racing Circuit is Scotland’s national motorsport centre and the country’s only permanent motor racing circuit. Opened in 1974 on the site of a former mineral railway, the circuit makes imaginative use of the natural contours of the Fife countryside, creating a fast, undulating and technically demanding lap that has become a favourite with drivers and spectators alike. Despite being relatively short at just under 1.3 miles (2.04 km), Knockhill’s dramatic elevation changes, blind crests and challenging corners ensure that every race is packed with action.

Throughout the year, Knockhill hosts an impressive calendar of motorsport events, including rounds of the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC), the British Superbike Championship (BSB), truck racing, rallycross, drifting and numerous club meetings. It is also an important centre for Scottish motorsport, providing facilities for driver training, motorcycle instruction, track days and corporate experiences. Thousands of enthusiasts visit each season to watch top-level competition or to experience the circuit for themselves, making Knockhill one of Scotland’s premier sporting venues. Its combination of spectacular racing, a beautiful countryside setting, and a welcoming atmosphere has earned it a reputation as one of the UK’s most distinctive and exciting race circuits.

East Fortune (East Lothian) – A former airfield turned venue, mainly for bike racing and historic events.

Larkhall Circuit – the longest outdoor Karting circuit in Scotland.

TeamSport – Venues in Glasgow and Dundee.

Scottish Motorsport Clubs

The Royal Scottish Automobile Club – RSAC Motorsport organises the RSAC Scottish Rally, the Three Lochs Classic, and the Spring Run.
It also plays a key role in the approval process for motoring events held on public roads in Scotland, acting as an authorised body to issue permits in accordance with government regulations.
