Cricket may not enjoy the same national prominence in Scotland as football or rugby, but it has firmly established itself, with a long and rich history. From historic club matches to international competitions, Scotland’s cricket scene is filled with passion, camaraderie, and love of the game.

Cricket in Scotland was introduced in the 19th century, with the first recorded match in 1832. Over the decades, it slowly gained popularity, particularly among Scotland’s elite and the English expatriate community. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, cricket had become a well-established sport, with competitive matches being held across Scotland.

In the early 1900s, Scotland started competing against other nations, and by 1994, the country was inducted as an Associate nation of the International Cricket Council (ICC)

Cricket in Scotland – Organisations

Cricket Scotland is the governing body for cricket in Scotland. It is responsible for overseeing the sport’s development and regulation. Cricket Scotland manages national and regional teams, develops grassroots cricket, and works to increase the sport’s visibility and participation at all levels nationwide.

Cricket in Scotland also works alongside local clubs, schools, and grassroots organisations to foster young talent and promote the sport in communities. The organisation plays a vital role in Scotland’s cricketing landscape, offering training programs, competitions, and resources for players of all ages and abilities.

East of Scotland Cricket Association (ESCA) manages amateur cricket in the east of Scotland. From Dunnikier in the North to Hawick in the South, Dunbar in the East and Westquarter in the West, the ESCA includes many clubs organised into 8 groups of amateur cricket. ESCA is part of the main national organisation, Cricket Scotland.
Strathmore & Perthshire Cricket Union – Offers organised, league cricket to a vast geographical area, from Huntly to Bannockburn, Perth to Dundee and Angus.
West Junior Cricket – Organising junior cricket in the west of Scotland.

Cricket Clubs

Aberdeen University Cricket Club – The club is open to all matriculated students of the university, and new members of all skill levels are welcome. Equipment is provided; however, members may bring their own if preferred. Coaches, umpires, scorers, and individuals with an interest in cricket are also encouraged to participate.
Training sessions are held throughout the academic year at Aberdeen Sports Village.

Gala Cricket Club – The ground has to be one of the most scenic sporting venues in the country, sitting at the foot of Meigle Hill on the west side of the town, with views looking down the Tweed Valley over the town and on over Melrose to the Eildon Hills.

The club hosts its home matches at Meggetland and currently enters two teams in the East of Scotland League, competing in Divisions 2 and 7. In addition, Boroughmuir Cricket Club participates in various midweek fixtures, including both competitive and friendly matches.
