Eilean Donan Castle is a famous and picturesque castle in the western Highlands of Scotland, near the village of Dornie.
It is one of the most iconic and recognised castles in Scotland. The castle is on a small tidal island where three lochs meet, Loch Duich, Loch Long, and Loch Alsh.
Eilean Donan Castle has a rich history dating back to the 13th century. It was originally built in 1220 as a defence against the Vikings.
Over the centuries, the castle underwent multiple expansions and renovations. However, in 1719, during the Jacobite uprising, government warships partially destroyed Eilean Donan.
Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap restored it to its former glory in the early 20th century, after it had remained in ruins for almost two centuries.
Today, Eilean Donan Castle is a popular tourist attraction open to the public. It offers visitors a glimpse into Scotland’s medieval history, featuring well-preserved rooms, artefacts, and displays. Photographers and filmmakers love the castle’s stunning location, perched on the island with the scenic Scottish Highlands as a backdrop.
