Scotland covers an area of about 77,900 square kilometres (30,090 square miles), making up roughly one-third of the total land area of the United Kingdom.
Although it occupies a large share of the UK’s landmass, Scotland’s population is only around 5.5 million, compared to more than 56 million in England. This gives Scotland a much lower population density — and plenty of room for its famous mountains, glens, and islands.
Stretching almost 600 miles from the English border to the Shetlands, Scotland includes over 790 islands and some of the most dramatic natural scenery in Europe.
