Balmoral Castle is the private Highland residence of the British Royal Family, located in Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire. Purchased in 1852 by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria, the estate became a deeply personal retreat for the monarch and her descendants. The present castle, completed in 1856 in the Scottish Baronial style, is constructed from local granite and characterised by its turrets, battlements and commanding position above the River Dee.

Unlike official royal palaces, Balmoral is privately owned rather than held by the Crown Estate. It functions as both a family residence and a working Highland estate, encompassing approximately 50,000 acres of moorland, woodland, farmland and mountain scenery. The estate remains closely associated with royal tradition and reflection, including the death of Queen Elizabeth II here in September 2022.

History & Heritage

The original Balmoral House was leased by Queen Victoria in 1848 before being purchased outright four years later. Prince Albert took a leading role in designing the new castle, reflecting the romantic Victorian fascination with Scotland and Highland culture.
